Mission:

Wheel Movement promotes safe and accessible bicycling in Augusta Georgia’s River Region.

What we do:

Wheel Movement supports the local bicycling community.  We recognize the lifestyle, economic, health, and tourism values of bicycling and provide educational programs, outreach initiatives, and advocacy efforts that generate and sustain a positive bicycling environment for all residents and visitors in Augusta’s River Region.

Who we are and why we exist:

Wheel Movement (WM) is a 501(c)3 non-profit volunteer bicycling advocacy organization.  It was founded in 2011 following the death of local friend and cycling enthusiast, Dr. Matthew Burke, who was fatally injured while riding his bike.  It is through this tragedy that leaders of WM have turned their pain into mobilized passion, action, and new policy.  WM aims to make road-sharing the norm and safe biking everyone’s priority. We exist to educate, advocate, and congregate as a community to make Augusta’s River Region a bicycle-friendly environment.

What we’re up to:

Creating a Community of and for Bicyclists

  • Increasing our membership to include a larger portion of the bicycling community and become the clearinghouse of information for all things biking in Augusta’s River Region.

  • Refreshing our website to provide:

    • Maps showing routes and trails in Augusta’s River Region

    • Calendar of events and rides in the community

    • Volunteer opportunities

    • Convenient ways to join and become involved

  • Increasing our social media presence through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

  • Presenting our two signature events: Taste of the Tour and Annual Ride of Celebration.

Community Outreach and Education

  • Working to increase bicycle friendly roadways and pathways throughout Augusta’s River Region.

  • Educating riders and the public about safe bicycling.

  • Planning and hosting entry-level rides throughout the region (Augusta Canal, North Augusta Greeneway, Coming soon: Euchee Creek Greenway).

  • Donating helmets for kids at the Augusta Urban Ministries (AUM) Bike Rodeo and supporting AUM’s bike refurbishing program.

  • Promoting local bicycle shops and the annual group rides that they plan and host.

  • Taking part in the Augusta Canal Annual Festival by leading group rides and teaching an educational course for kids.

  • Working with GA Bikes! to develop Complete Streets ordinances and policies in Augusta and other communities in the region.

  • Spearheading the bid to host the 2018 GA Trails Summit in Augusta.
